Dying Light First Impressions

Dying Light is arguably the first major game release of 2015. The hype machine got rolling around E3 last year and hasn't let up much. I have to admit though, this game had not been on my radar until recently. Zombie games are a dime a dozen now and are approaching the legendary status of WWII games in terms of amount of games out there. But, what finally got my attention and ultimately made me decide to pick it up was how well it blends different types of game genres into one cohesive experience and doesn't hold back. Dying Light is a great way to kick off 2015 and gives us gamers yet another fantastic title to add to our next gen libraries.

I was hesitant at first; seeing Dying Light immediately reminded me of Dead Island and how the world is open for you to make your way through, survive and become a badass. I was concerned about the story given that these kinds of games in the past have not lent themselves to particularly good story telling. However, from the start, Dying Lights' story sucks you in with an easy to understand plot that doesn't do much else than serve as the reason to explore the world and its characters; something unusual for this kind of game. Far too often, games like these have characters that are more brain dead than the zombies that inhabit them. The characters are interesting and the writers did a great job of making each one unique and memorable in their own way.

The visuals are great. The world is lush and feels full of life, even though its filled with dead people. Every building, room and open area is jammed full of things to collect and explore. The different gameplay aspects blend well together. The RPG elements, such as leveling up, earning experience and gaining new abilities are simple but grow in complexity the more you work to build the type of character that you want. The action is frantic and the horror moments are tense and downright frightening.

So far, I'm loving the game and look forward to putting many more hours in.
